Canadian playwright Morris Panych’s classic comedy VIGIL is a brilliantly poignant dark comedy about an unexpectedly extended visit between Kemp, a lifelong misfit, and his bedridden elderly aunt. Kemp’s relentless, matter-of-fact outrageousness makes the audience laugh and gasp at the same time, as his good deed of visiting a supposedly-dying aunt quickly wears off – and the two must come to a sort of unusual peace with each other.
Holiday rituals, sexuality, children, family life, and death itself – not a subject is safe from Kemp’s curmudgeonly but often touching commentary, as the “last days” of Grace stretch into her “last seasons”. Grace, in her turn, is largely, but not entirely, an observer in the whole affair - knitting, eating butterscotch pudding, and providing Kemp with the audience he’s never had before.
“a marvelous dark comedy, rich and philosophically thoughtful” - NOW Magazine
“a small masterpiece” - The Globe & Mail
