Victor Suthren

Naval historian Victor Suthren tells us about Bartholomew Roberts, a 17-century Welsh-born pirate. Tall, dark, and handsome, Roberts wore fine velvets and lace. With exceptional abilities as a navigator, he captured over four hundred ships, and seldom lost a fight at sea. He drank tea rather than rum, and created the famous Pirate Code, which spelled out democratic and ethical principles that stand in contrast to his highly illegal and violent occupation. Sailing from the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to Brazil at the height of the Atlantic slave trade, Roberts created a lasting reputation as Black Bart, king of pirates.
