Alice and the World We Live In is an excellent play. Written by Montreal playwright Alexandria Haber and directed by Theatre Kingston’s Artistic Director Rosemary Doyle. This two hander stars Helen Bretzke and Sean Roberts.

Alice, through the experiences of its titular character, asks questions many of us don’t want to consider: how do you deal with the unexpected loss of the person you love most? When you are mired in grief, what gives you the strength to go on? Is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

Following the death of her husband Ever in a terrorist attack, Alice must grapple with these questions, which leave her paralyzed on an Italian mountain path, too frightened to move forward and unable to go back. Yet, despite the meaty drama of Alice and Ever’s story, Haber’s script is equipped with an enjoyable armoury of firecracker one-liners. Let yourself be carried away by the script and you’ll have an excellent night.
