Next to Normal is a Tony award winning rock musical with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt.
It's story concerns a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness and the attempts to alleviate it have on her family. The musical addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and the underbelly of suburban life. The musical began in 1998 as a 10-minute workshop sketch about a woman undergoing electroshock therapy, and its impact on her family, called "Feeling Electric". It was then workshopped and expanded into a full-length musical. The show in its current form opened on Broadway in April 2009, winning three Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the eighth musical to win this honour.
It has since spawned a national tour and many international productions.

Though it explores some heavy topics surrounding mental health, Next to Normal is nonetheless poignant, witty, and will leave a lasting impact on audiences long after they leave the theatre.
