Sweeney Todd, a once mild-mannered barber, returns to London after a 15-year exile ordered by the corrupt Judge Turpin. Finding his wife gone and his daughter under Turpins guardianship, Sweeney plans his revenge against the man who destroyed his life. He takes up with his former landlady Mrs. Lovett, proprietress of a failing meat pie shop, and sets in motion the grisly events that earn him the title: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

The story of Sweeney Todd first appeared in the 1830s in England in the form of an urban legend. It was then adapted into a musical and first opened on Broadway at the Uris Theatre on March 1, 1979 and ran for 557 performances.  Since then the show has gone on to productions around the world and multiple revivals in both London and on Broadway. The musical has won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and garnered 9 Tony Award nominations, winning 8, including Musical, Book, Score, Director, Scenic Design and Costume Design.
