PRESS REVIEWS
Atom Egoyan “Iceland is a beautifully structured and extremely powerful play that haunts the mind. Billon is an original and exciting voice.”
NOW Magazine (Glenn Sumi) – NNNNN (out of 5) and Critic’s Pick “Nicolas Billon’s absorbing play shows how three vastly different people are affected by what one character calls the C-word (capitalism) and the financial crisis. Billon is a masterful storyteller, drawing us into his characters’ lives via richly detailed monologues (plus a bit of dialogue to suggest past conversations), full of haunting imagery that echoes throughout the play. The actors dig deeply into their flawed but human creatures (only one of them slightly under- developed), with director Ravi Jain and his superb design team making each shaft of light, crossing of leg or overturning of a chair full of meaning.”
Toronto Star (4 out of 4 stars) “Ravi Jain’s direction is tight and focused, while the design is spare and effective…A detailed and cleverly written script, performed and directed with real verve. This is an Iceland with lots of fire.”
Globe and Mail (3 ½ out of 4 stars) “… an intelligent, gripping tale that cleverly taps into the housing boom and bubble anxieties of Torontonians.”
Set against the backdrop of the banking crisis, a confrontation between a real estate agent and a tenant takes an unexpected turn. Premiering as part of the 2012 Summerworks Festival, Iceland won the The Summerworks NOW Audience Choice Award, NOW Magazine Outstanding Production List, Outstanding Ensembles List and Outstanding Direction List. It also won for its playwright Nicolas Billon the Governor General's Award for Drama.
