Inspired by the memoirs of Maria von Trapp, the inspirational story of the von Trapp family has been a big success on Broadway and on film. Initially dismissed by critics as 'too sugary',this musical has become a Christmas favourite with songs such as Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Sixteen Going on Seventeen,, The Sound of Music and Eidelweiss. Julie Andrews and Canadian Christopher Plummer starred in the film version. The musical won 5 Tony Awards on Broadway and 10 Oscars' as a film.
St Andrews will be a fitting environment for the musical, as a number of scenes occur in a church. The bells of St Andrews clock tower and the church organ will be used in the production. The rich acoustics of the sanctuary will enhance the beautiful music.
